Let’s spill the tea on the 2024 Met Gala!  A star-studded event where fashion meets artistry in the most jaw-dropping way. It’s like the Super Bowl of style, where celebs and designers bring their A-game to the red carpet. Each year I can wait to see the looks. From show-stopping gowns to daring ensembles that push the boundaries, the Met Gala is where dreams are made of, and fashion fantasies come alive!

But let’s be real, sometimes the red carpet at the Met Gala can serve some serious looks, and not always in the good way. Not every look is wow, even if a designer’s name is attached. Sometimes, the fashion choices miss the mark on the overall theme of the event. And let’s face it, there have been head-scratching outfits on that famous red carpet over the years. At this 2024’s event, which took place on Monday, May 6th, there were some serious fashion moments – whether for better or for worse remains up for debate.

Personally, I couldn’t help but notice that the fashion picks weren’t quite as extravagant as we’ve seen in the past runway moments. And can we talk about the absence of Rihanna and ASAP Rocky? Their jaw-dropping Met appearances have become a red carpet ritual, and it was a total bummer not to have them grace us with their presence this time around.

This year Met gala’s theme was “Garden of Time”.  An inspiration by the name of J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. The theme totally vibed with the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

For me, the concept of the “Garden of Time” evokes a magical and enchanting place, where flowers bloom abundantly in every corner. It is a delicate and pristine environment that exudes pure beauty. It creates a sense of wonder and admiration, like being transported to a fairy realm. The imagery of flowers everywhere adds to the elegant quality of this garden, making it a truly captivating and fantastic setting.

To me, the key criteria for a stunning red carpet look at the Met Gala is when the outfit aligns perfectly with the theme of the event and is visually appealing. Sometimes, a look may not be something I’d typically favor on another red carpet, but if it makes sense in the context of the theme, I can appreciate and even love it. The magic truly happens when a look strikes that balance between thematic relevance and aesthetic appeal, creating a memorable and captivating moment on the iconic Met Gala red carpet.

Mona Patel’s look is absolutely one of my favourites! Although it may not be my preference for other events, I absolutely love the dress for the Met Gala. She completely embodied the theme with her stunning butterfly-inspired custom Iris Van Herpen couture gown. The delicacy of the design, the color, and that magical train — it all came together to create a fairy-like masterpiece. She truly stole the show with her enchanting look! Mona Patel is a successful businesswoman of Indian origin. She manages multiple companies, including Couture for Cause. It is the very reason why she was invited to the Met Gala. Couture for Cause is a non-profit organization that combines fashion and humanitarian auctions.

Taylor Russell rocked a unique wood-painted bodice cast from Loewe, looking absolutely gorgeous. The natural tones of the wood blended beautifully with her skin, creating a captivating visual harmony. She paired it with a flowing ivory skirt, which perfectly balanced the boldness of the wood. To complete her look, Taylor opted for delicate accessories like diamond stud earrings by Fred Leighton and a pair of stylish Jimmy Choo sandals

I really like Tyler Mitchell’s look, from the Prada runway of spring 2024 menswear to the Met Gala 2024. The poplin blouse in a delicate shade of pink, adorned with handcrafted floral details, perfectly embodies the Garden of Time theme. The combination with black trousers and leather loafers creates a simple yet classy aesthetic.

Let’s talk about Tyla’s embrace of the theme in her Balmain! The dress beautifully captures the essence of time within the Garden of Time theme. The gown is made of sand represent an hourglass. For Tyla’s dress, Olivier Rousteing, the Creative Director of Balmain, was fascinated by the idea of impermanence. He wanted to redefine limitations and elevate a transient material into a timeless masterpiece, which served as the inspiration for this creation. The strapless gown was designed to hug every inch of the singer’s body before flaring out into a mermaid train with her hourglass-shaped bag is a masterpiece.

I truly appreciate the delicate and fragile nature of the dress, along with the graceful movement in the train. Those aspects symbolize the concept of time for me. In my eyes, time is both fragile and relentless, constantly moving forward yet often leaving an indelible impact on the past.

I think most people would agree with me that Kylie Jenner’s look was kinda boring. Sure, the ivory gown by Oscar de la Renta was stunning, but it felt a bit too basic for the Met Gala, you know? Where is the reference to the theme? I mean, I see the flower in her hair, but it just didn’t hit the mark for me.

I find J. Harrison’s outfit to be a bit overwhelming, with too much going on. From the color to the hat, and all the textures – feather, crystal, and bow. However, it’s worth noting that Howie B is a designer known for creating extravagant costumes. His signature style is all about flamboyance, and he has designed for drag performers as well as music videos.

I hate to say it, but Lea Michele’s dress gives off a cheap vibe. Maybe it’s the excessive use of satin and tulle that creates that impression. It somehow reminds me of those prom dresses that I didn’t like.
